Caine Mutiny Court Martial
Caine Mutiny Court Martial
January 26 – February 19, 2012
By Herman Wouk
The Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about a Navy court martial in World War II has been adapted by the author into a suspenseful evening of theatre. A young lieutenant has relieved his captain of command in the midst of a typhoon on the grounds that the captain, Queeg, is a psychopath in crisis and would have sent the ship and its crew to their destruction. Naval tradition is against the lieutenant, but testimony eventually reveals a devastating picture of Queeg's mental disintegration.
Greg Procaccino, Director; Erin Meyer, Stage Manager
This production is dedicated to Joe Acito, a long-time literature teacher at Elder High School who passed away in 2011. He loved the theatre and could talk about it for hours at a time. He was a great friend of the Covedale Center for the Performing Arts. Caine Mutiny Court-Martial is based on the novel The Caine Mutiny by Herman Wouk, a book Joe taught and knew well. The book won the 1952 Pulitzer Prize. The play has become a classic in the courtroom drama genre. The characters are real, flawed, serious, funny and intensely engaged in a battle for truth - a truth upon which men's lives, reputations and honor depended. That is a combination Joe would have loved.
