Everybody Loves Opal

"Everybody Loves Opal" by John Patrick is the delightful and heartwarming tale of a simple woman who finds herself in the company of a band of low lifes who figure her for an easy mark. The plan is to insure her life for a lot of money, bump her off and claim the bounty. Of course, life is never as simple as it seems, and what happens changes all their lives for the better. This is a charming comedy suitable for all ages.
Characters: Opal Kronkie - lives a simple life in a small house in the local junkyard. A true innocent, she sees only good in people. Late 40's to mid 60's Bradford - a bitter con man on whom the good in people is truly lost. Mid 30's to late 40's Gloria - a young lady who has not had an easy life. She has to be taught to appreciate the good in people. Mid 20's to early 30's Solomon - a bit of a bumbler who is a good man at heart but swept up in bad situations. Early 40's to late 50's Joe - a young police officer who wants to make sure only good comes to Opal. Late 20's to late 30's Doctor - arrives to check on Opal's health and leaves questioning his own sanity. A nice comic role. Mid 50's to early 70's

The Show: By Philip Grecian. Based on the movie A Christmas Story, Written by Jean Shepherd, Leigh Brown and Bob Clark
“You’ll shoot your eye out, kid!” Jean Shepherd's memoir of growing up in 1940’s Indiana, follows Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. Ralphie pleads his case to his mother, his teacher and Santa Claus himself at Goldblatt's Department Store. All the elements from the beloved movie are here - the family's temperamental furnace, the school bully Scut Farkas, the boys' bet with a wet tongue on an icy lamppost, the Little Orphan Annie decoder ring; Ralphie's father winning “a major award” – the lady’s leg lamp in a fishnet stocking! A Christmas Story is destined to become a theatrical holiday perennial.

Rehearsals begin Monday, December 6, 2010

The Show: B By Neil Simon
The first play in Neil Simon's autobiographical trilogy is still his best, filled with riotous humor, sweet memories and deep compassion for the times and family who have gone before him. It’s a portrait of the playwright as a teen in 1937, living with his family in a lower middle-class Brooklyn walk-up. Eugene Jerome, standing in for the author, is the central character. Dreaming of baseball and girls, Eugene must cope with his mundane family life in Brooklyn - his formidable mother, his overworked father, and his worldly older brother Stanley. Throw into the mix his widowed Aunt Blanche, her two young (but rapidly aging) daughters and you have a recipe for hilarity, served up Simon-style. This bittersweet memoir evocatively captures the life of a struggling household where, as his father states "if you didn't have a problem, you wouldn't be living here." Simon’s finest play.
Dennis Murphy, Director; Nicole Ignatowski, Production Stage Manager
Jack Jerome, Eugene’s salesman father (40 yrs. old)
Please note: Performers do not have to be the character ages as listed, but must be able to play those ages.
All roles are paid positions.

Posted Fri, July 23 Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park Holds Children's Auditions for Over the Tavern
CINCINNATI PLAYHOUSE IN THE PARK HOLDS
CHILDREN'S AUDITIONS FOR OVER THE TAVERN ONAUGUST 7
Deadline to submit materials for consideration is July 30
(CINCINNATI) –TheCincinnati Playhouse in the Park will hold auditions on Saturday, August 7 for boys interested in performing two roles in the 2010-2011 production of OVER THE TAVERN.
A coming-of-age comedy by Tom Dudzick, OVER THE TAVERN revolves around wise-cracking Rudy, one of four Pazinski kids growing up above a tavern in 1959. As Rudy prepares for his confirmation, he decides to go knuckle to ruler with his formidable teacher, Sister Clarissa, questioning everything and spending more time on his Ed Sullivan impersonation than his studies. A sell-out hit around the country and at the Playhouse in 1999, OVER THE TAVERN returns to the Marx Theatre January 22 – February 19, 2011 (opening night: January 27). It will be presented as a co-production with the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, where it will run December 1 – December 26 (opening night: December 3). Playhouse Producing Artistic Director Edward Stern will direct both productions.
Two area boys will be cast to fill the roles of Rudy, who is 12 years old; and his brother Georgie, a 13-year-old boy with mental disabilities, described as sweet but with the mind of a 3- to 4-year-old. The boys playing the parts may be slightly older, but have to be able to convey the ages of the characters. The actor portraying Rudy must be personable and possess good comedic timing, while having no discernible dialect. Because of the 1959 setting of the show, the boys must also have the appearance of children of that time period.
The part of Rudy – and possibly the part of Georgie – will require a commitment to both the St. Louis and Cincinnati productions. A parent or other designated guardian will be required to accompany them to St. Louis for the entire run, and tutors will be provided.
Boys should submit a resume of any experience to the Playhouse, along with a photograph (a good quality school or family photo is acceptable). Boys auditioning for the part of Rudy will be asked to perform a couple of scenes from the play; boys auditioning to portray Georgie will perform a monologue.
Rehearsals for the St. Louis production begin November 5; rehearsals for the Cincinnati production begin January 14. Interested boys must be available for all performances of the show, which are scheduled Tuesdays through Sundays and include several weekday student and public matinees.
Headshots and resumes should be sent to the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, ATTN: AUDITIONS, c/o Edward Stern, P. O. Box 6537, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45206. To be considered, all photos and resumes must be received at the Playhouse by Friday, July 30.
Those selected to audition will be contacted by telephone to schedule specific times. All auditions will be held at the Playhouse, located in Eden Park at the edge of Mt. Adams.
The Playhouse is supported, in part, by the generosity of the tens of thousands of individuals and businesses that give to the Fine Arts Fund.
The Ohio Arts Council helps fund the Playhouse with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.
The Playhouse also receives funding from the Shubert Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

(CINCINNATI) – The Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park will hold auditions on Saturday, July 10 and Sunday, July 11 for children interested in performing in the 2010 production of Charles Dickens' A CHRISTMAS CAROL, presented by KeyBank. The show, an annual Tristate holiday tradition, celebrates its 20th year this season with performances running December 2 to 30.
Nine area children will be cast to fill speaking and non-speaking parts in the annual production. Roles are available for boys and girls ages 8 to 13 years old. Children should submit a resume of any experience to the Playhouse, along with a photograph (a good quality school or family photo is acceptable). The resume and photo must be submitted again even if they have been sent in the past. The resume must indicate exact birth date and height and include an e-mail address and telephone number. At the audition, children will be asked to share a one-minute monologue, story or poem with an English accent.
Interested children must be available for all rehearsals, most of which are scheduled around school hours. Rehearsals for A CHRISTMAS CAROL begin in mid-November. Children must also be available for all performances of the show, which are scheduled Tuesdays through Sundays and which include some weekday student and public matinees.

Posted Mon, April 19 Volunteer Musicians to Perform in a New Holocaust-Related Play
Looking for volunteer skilled musicians to perform in a new Holocaust-related play, FROM AUSCHWITZ TO CINCINNATI: THE SURVIVING TUNES by Kalman Kivkovich.
The play is based on a true story—the life of a phenomenal violinist and Holocaust survivor, HENRY MEYER. Throughout we get glimpse into one of the darkest pits of human history—recent history. We seize the enormous desire to survive against all odds. We witness a success story of one very lucky man. "I am a winner," he often said, "with me, all their effort failed."
The late Henry Meyer was a member of the celebrated LaSalle String Quartet and a University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music professor emeritus. Mr. Meyer was an Auschwitz survivor.
We are looking for musicians who are proficient on one of the following instruments: violin, viola, flute and cello.
Music to be played as background: (Classical Chamber music / String Quartet). There are scenes where the musicians will be part of the Ensemble. Acting experience would be helpful, but not required. We will accept Male and Female. Preferred age: 18-25, but could be up to 30.
In particularly we are looking for a male violinist age 18-25 with some Acting experience. [Fit & medium height] to assume a small support role as YOUNG HENRY.
This is a LARGE and SERIOUS project to begin with a blocked Staged Reading, and continue with an anticipated full production next year in which stipends will be allocated.
If you are qualified, and interested, please contact the playwright and send / attach acting resume along with a recent headshot to attention of:

Posted Thu, April 15 Release: Janet's Fund, A Grant Oportunity for Incremental Education and Training of Operations Support Staff
Grant applications now being accepted through April 30
CINCINNATI, OH – Janet's Fund is a grant opportunity for the incremental education and training of operations support staff in Cincinnati's performing arts community. The endowment fund (valued at more than $500,000) was established by Janet Taylor, a Cincinnati native who spent her lifetime career working in a variety of performing arts management roles. Her last position was as the Vice President and General Manager for the Cincinnati Arts Association. Janet died in October 2006 at the age of 56, leaving a legacy of accomplishments in the performing arts industry.
Grant applications are currently being accepted. The submission deadline is April 30. Applications may be obtained from the Cincinnati Arts Association by contacting Brenda Jones at 513/977-4115 or bjones@cincinnatiart.org and may be downloaded at www.CincinnatiArts.ORG/janetsfund.
Janet's Fund was created with the following founding principles:
Fund Objective – The objective of Janet's Fund is to sponsor incremental education and training for those individuals engaged in operations support roles with performing arts organizations in the Greater Cincinnati Area.
Operations Oriented – The focus of the fund is on performing arts positions that involve technical, backstage or operations support, such as lighting, scenery, theater maintenance, front of house services, ticketing operations, etc. Performance or arts administration support such as artist training, dance coaching, conductor workshops, administrative or marketing/public relations seminars, etc. would not be eligible.
Incremental – The purpose of the Fund is to provide incremental education and training that is not normally a part of an organization’s annual budget. Applications that allow an additional person(s) within an organization to attend a training session where the organization’s budget would normally only allow sending a single person are eligible and encouraged.
Broadbased – Grant recipients should span the broad variety of performing arts organizations in the Greater Cincinnati region (defined as the eight county area served by the Greater Cincinnati Foundation) and individuals (or groups of individuals) within those organizations.
Participation – Eligible grant recipients will be not-for-profit performing arts organizations. Individuals (volunteers or paid staff) may also apply with documented support from such organizations.
Evergreen – Janet's Fund is an invested endowment fund. Grants will be awarded only from the income from the Fund in order to allow the endowment to grow with inflation, providing a lasting resource to the arts community.
Janet's Fund is managed by the Cincinnati Arts Association (CAA) in conjunction with an independent, dedicated Advisory Board. CAA provides the necessary administrative support, including the legal and fiscal responsibility for the Fund and its activities.
Grant applications from the Greater Cincinnati region's arts community are accepted twice a year, in April and October. A list of all proposals that meet the grant criteria are presented to the Advisory Board for their consideration and final decisions. The Advisory Board may award additional grants during the year to capture last minute opportunities as funds allow.
Grant awards may be used as "matching funds" to allow organizations or individuals to further leverage them. Grant applications which include private or organizational matching funds are encouraged.
Grant awards may include up to 100% of the reasonable costs of the training (travel, registration fees, meals, lodging, etc.), but may not include additional costs not directly related to the training itself, e.g. personnel costs, entertainment of others, etc.
Each grant recipient will be required to submit a summary of the training they received, key learning and how it will be leveraged within their organization or career. Each grant recipient must supply a detailed expense accounting versus the approved grant request prior to receiving reimbursement. Reimbursement will be made for the grant amount or actual expenses incurred, whichever is lower.
Only the income from the endowment is eligible to be distributed and will be drawn at a maximum rate of 5% per year to allow the principal to grow with inflation. The Advisory Board will determine on an ongoing basis whether to distribute the full 5% depending on the performance of the financial return of the principal.

Posted Thu, March 18 Roles Still Available for MLT's BABES IN HOLLYWOOD Director Charley Shafor is still looking to complete his cast. Please contact him to set up an audition appointment. Note: Possible travel allowance available for those living outside of the Middletown area.
BABES IN HOLLYWOOD Created by Summerwind Productions
Cast requirements: The following are the character descriptions provided by the creators. However we are looking to expand the size of the show due to the breadth of music in it. Please use the following only as a guideline for the vocal ranges. We would also welcome vocally talented young people from the 9th grade and above to audition for this show.
WOMAN 1 G3 thru D#5 (though G3 thru E5 is a plus) A bright-eyed ingenue, subtly reminiscent of the young Judy Garland but capable of playing a more sensual part in Act Two.
WOMAN 2 F#3 thru D5 (though F3 thru E5 is a plus) A worldly chanteuse, subtly reminiscent of the older Judy Garland but secure enough to be a trustworthy emcee - a gal who's been-there-done-that but has an admirable attitude about it.
MAN 1 A2 thru E4 (though G#2 thru A4 is a plus) A vaudevillian performer subtly reminiscent of the young Mickey Rooney, but capable of coming across as real in ballads.
MAN 2 G2 thru D#4 (though G2 thru F#4 is a plus) Less an impersonator of Mickey Rooney than a grown man to counter-balance Man 1 - a solid, musical theatre emcee perhaps the man Mickey Rooney might have become had he stayed purely a Broadway song and dance man.
Audition requirements:
Please prepare TWO songs that shows your vocal range. We suggest preparing songs from the American Songbook or the Garland and Rooney era.
Find a barn, have mom sew the costumes and then get ready to swing, sway and swoon to over 30 of the most glorious songs of the Twentieth Century. BABES IN HOLLYWOOD salutes the legendary musical careers of Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney. You'll thrill to such American classics as "Over the Rainbow," "You Made Me Love You," "Easter Parade," "But Not for Me," "The Man Who Got Away," "On the Sunny Side of the Street," "Meet Me in St. Louis," "That's Entertainment," "Where or When," "Born in a Trunk," "Yankee Doodle Boy," "Come Rain or Come Shine," "Strike up the Band," and many more! BABES IN HOLLYWOOD is sure to delight audiences of all ages.

Posted Tue, March 9 Local Youngsters Needed for K.I.D.S. Performance Group
Once again, the children's ensemble group, "K.I.D.S." is in need of two or three local youngsters (ages 9-12) to become a part of the "K.I.D.S." entertainment group. K.I.D.S. stands for "Kids In Difficult Situations" and we entertain at elementary schools in the Greater Cincinnati area. Children are paid per show. There is no payment for rehearsals. All rehearsals are at my studio in Loveland.
"K.I.D.S." is scheduled to perform during the week of April 12 to 15 at an elementary school. I need at least two children to join us as rehearsals will start soon. I get each child's schedule and try very hard to arrange the rehearsal schedule around everyone's other commitments, including performance in other shows, basketball, soccer, music lessons, and whatever else a child might be involved in. This will probably be our last show of the school year. We already have several bookings for the start of the school year coming up.
"K.I.D.S." is a talented group of youngsters who perform skits, monologues, songs, raps about problems that students have every day of their lives on the playground, in the school hallways, and sometimes, even in the home. We have presentations on: bullying, nasty nicknames that hurt and demean other children, divorce in the family, why children should never start to smoke, eating disorders and body image, no guns in school, cheating in school, workaholic parents, and more. After each skit or monologue, another member of the group comes forward and talks to the audience about the problem just represented and then gives agencies and phone numbers that children can call for help. Our tags usually end with, "Remember, you may just be a kid, but you have rights, too!"
Children usually join K.I.D.S. and stay for two to three years. (I've had several for four!) The shows are written and geared to the elementary school audience (grades 2 to 5). The shows are performed for assemblies during the school day either in the a.m. portion of a day or close to the end of a school day. So, all children auditioning for K.I.D.S. need to be good students as each child will be taking a portion of a day off for each show. What usually happens is after the children audition and are accepted, I give brochures explaining our mission to the mom or dad. These are shown to the counselor or principal of the new "K.I.D.S." member school. Since our mission is "Children Helping Children Through Performance," the school authorities think it is a good endeavor for children to help others, and gladly give permission, and we get some bookings this way, too!
LOOK FOR "K.I.D.S." SHOWS SCHEDULED THROUGH MEDIA BRIDGES - WE'LL BE ON CHANNELS 15 And 24 PERFORMING IN PAST SHOWS AT VARIOUS SCHOOLS. AN EXACT SCHEDULE SHOULD APPEAR ON OUR WEBSITE SOON!
PLEASE GO TO OUR WEBSITE TO FIND OUT ALL ABOUT US. THERE IS LOTS OF INFORMATION THAT EXPLAINS WHAT WE DO AND ALSO MY QUALIFICATIONS AS THE CREATOR, PRODUCER, AND DIRECTOR OF "K.I.D.S."
OUR ADDRESS IS: www.sunnyskids.com - Be sure and click on the links and see our lineup of children who are now with us; on the CLIPS link are pictures of our members and if you scroll down, there is a video window where you can see a rap from a past show. IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS, PLEASE WRITE: sunny@sunnyskids.com or sunnystudio@zoomtown.com or (513) 697-1929.
Posted Mon, March 8 Seeking Theater or Group to Stage the Premiere of New Play
I am looking for a theater or group to stage the premiere of a new play.
I have adapted for the stage the first published work of America's first professional novelist, Charles Brockden Brown. The work is ALCUIN, published in 1798. In the words of Lee R. Edwards, ALCUIN is "the first sustained and earnest argument for the rights of women to appear in this country."
My adaptation, which I have titled EXEMPT FROM A THOUSAND TOILS, is in two acts, running approximately 90 minutes. The play is written as a hybrid staged reading, falling somewhere between LOVE LETTERS and 84 CHARING CROSS ROAD.
EXEMPT FROM A THOUSAND TOILS is a wide-ranging dialog between a young schoolmaster, Alcuin, and a middle-aged widow, Mrs. Carter. Topics range from politics to education, the "proper" place for women in society, the Constitution, voting, sexual relations, a fantastical place called "the paradise of women," and marriage. Despite being set in the year 1798, Mrs. Carter's declaration that "…the bickering and dissentions of a married life flow from no other source than that of too frequent communication" certainly will resonate today. "
Because the play is set at a fancy party in a large American city at the beginning of the "Jane Austen era," the play has the built-in appeal of the costumes, manners, and sensibility of the many Austen adaptations but with the advantage of a female character of greater strength and contemporary significance.
What woman (or man) wouldn't find either subversive or appealing (or both) Mrs. Carter's question to the young schoolmaster: "Why is marriage to condemn two human beings to dwell under the same roof and to eat at the same table…?" Indeed --- Why? She answers, and defends her logic, admirably in the second act.
EXEMPT provides a fascinating insight into the gender culture of the years of the early American Republic with insights that will interest and challenge today's audience, with several conclusions as controversial today as they were in 1798.
I am a professionally-produced and published playwright and have also adapted Elizabeth Barrett Browning's monumental feminist novel, AURORA LEIGH, as a screenplay.

Posted Thu, March 4 Sorg Opera Company in Middletown Having Set and Prop Sale
Sorg Opera Company is losing their storage facility and, thus, selling their sets & props at cheap, cheap, cheap prices. It's rather tragic, really. The former owner of Sorg Opera House passed away and the building was sold to a group who does not take care of it. Then the Sorg Opera Company itself was run into debt by a TD who skipped town without paying bills.
They've been doing very small productions in any place they can lately, but with Middletown dying, the city decided to condemn several old buildings and slate them for demolition, including the building they were allowing Sorg O.C. to house their sets & props in. So now Sorg Opera Company is closing for good and they have to get rid of their things or it will all end up in a landfill in two months.
I was able to purchase several large, professionally built sets and several really nice props for practically nothing! If you're interested, you may call 513.423.6745 and ask for Howard Johnson. Howard is the President of Sorg Opera Company. Spread the word to theatre people you know. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity!

Posted Wed, Feb. 3 Male Actor Needed for Role of Anselmo in BAB's MAN OF LA MANCHA

Posted Mon, Jan. 11 Lebanon Theatre Company Offering Paint Free to a Good Theater Home
First of all, we want to thank all of the groups and individuals who have called to offer venues and other help. We really appreciate your support.
We are getting ready for an auction that will probably be held on February 6. We will be selling props, some costumes, all kinds of table decorations and set decor pieces. Shows that are included are GLASS MENAGERIE, ON GOLDEN POND, STEEL MAGNOLIAS and various others. We have an antique stove and 80+ padded gold banquet chairs, 15 bent wood chairs from the Beaumont Inn in Harrodsburg, KY and many more treasures. We are also parting with some of our furniture and eight beautiful hanging lights which were in our banquet and lobby area. We'll have pictures on line soon. Prior to that auction, we have been cleaning out, organizing, and so forth.
We have many, many, many partial cans of paint that are excellent for scene painting. We will be unable to move them to our storage facility which is not heated sufficiently to store the paint. We want to offer it to any of you who will come and get it from our facility. If no one comes to get it, we will be forced to put kitty litter in it to harden it and then throw it all away. That would be such a shame.
If you would like to look at it or just take it, please let us know. You can call Georgia Dunn or Wayne Dunn at 513.494.1932 to arrange pickup. Some of us are there during the day and some in the evening so we should be able to set up a time.
Again, thanks so much and please put our auction on your calendar. Things will probably go cheap and you might as well have them.

Posted Mon, Aug. 17 Cincinnati Playwrights Initiative (CPI) New Voices Series Competition Seeking New Scripts
CPI invites playwrights who are residents of the Tri-State area (OH, KY, IN), or who currently live and work in the Tri-State counties, to submit one full-length unproduced play script or up to three unproduced one-acts for consideration for public staged readings in the New Voices Series. There is no deadline—submissions are accepted year round.
If you are not already a member of CPI, a $15 entry fee (1-year membership), payable to CPI, must accompany the manuscript(s). Please note that you must be a paid member also at the time of your scheduled venue.
Receipt of manuscripts will be acknowledged via e-mail; thereafter the playwright will be contacted ONLY if the play is chosen for the Series. Response time varies from two months to one year. Entries and payment should be sent to: CPI New Voices Series, P.O. Box 19969, Cincinnati, OH 45219-0969.
Selected Scripts
Members of CPI Play-Reading Committee read each of the submitted scripts. They are unaware of who wrote the plays. The committee follows a specific evaluation criteria and a vote is taken. Submission of scripts does not guarantee acceptance.
A selected script will be given one public staged reading under the auspices of Cincinnati Playwrights Initiative's New Voices Series. The playwright must, however, be involved in the process and procedures leading to the event and is expected to attend the venue. If the playwright is relatively distant from Cincinnati, he/she may try to appoint a volunteer representative or a Director who will do the extra chores. The playwright is still expected to attend the venue.
CPI's New Voices Staged Readings are performed at the Aronoff Center for the Arts, Fifth Third Bank Theater (Black Box). Corner of Main and Seventh Streets.
